    Don, we rely on you to tell us what we don't want to hear! That is the most important part, next to us actually hearing it!

    This is a rite of passage IMO to really call yourself a software engineer. I'm at the point where I don't care how horrendous the problem is... I'll just dig into it like it's normal.

    Wholeheartedly agreed. Though I wouldn’t dismiss being ‘dependent’ on ChatGPT when learning to code. I find that the bugs that ChatGPT cannot resolve as ones I learned the most from, often forcing me to read documentations and other people’s codes. And if not, repeatedly asking the same question and getting the same answer from ChatGPT about a bug also forced me to learn about the bug and system.

    Hipster tech is what everyone is learning without having any understanding of what it does. These people calling themselves devs these days are like a guy AI generating a song calling himself a musician.

    You have to average code 12 hours/day for a minimum of 3-4 years. You actually need to know the Masters/Ph.D-level architectures. You have to be good at math. That's the reality. Also, start with C++, always start with C++, then do web development after 4 years of mastering C++ building pro audio plugins and video games. You're going to be as good as you are seriously passionate about coding. Also, love to code so much the job doesn't matter. Passionate coders are naturally employed. If you can't do the above, it's probably unrealistic for you.

    Don't "network". Connect with people. Go to events that are actually interesting to you. Meet people that you would like to be friends with. We're mammals, not robots. Socializing is not primarily a transactional interaction.

    9:39 I spent about 6 months in a small discord. Even tho I was mainly just posting about myself and what I was doing, others would often send links for me to look at. And now have a mentor I talk to almost every day :D It takes time and effort to become apart of something <3

    I've been in my first backend dev job for 1 year by now (C# .Net), and it has been a journey with one revalation after the other, while actually learning to code. For me, what took it to the next level, was to 1) start coding up against an actual solution, and next 2) Learn about design patterns, unified proces and architecture 3) focus on designing for a solid database structure. 4) atm my focus is the TaskAPI and getting into the deployment cycle. For me it is a feeling of a never ending learning process, and thats is part of what i like. I am halfway through with my master in program development. I am 53 years old. My intro was 3.5 basic creating text based adventure games in my teens and small programs to steer robots around in school. Then nothing for many years until I studied game design and basic java, html, css. Then i started learning about crypto, and got eager in learning about blockchain technology. Took courses in coding solidity and javascript for blockchain and to create smart contracts. Having basic knowledge of many different code languages was fun, but doing some actual projects along the way has been the best way to learn. Its troublesome, painfull and rewarding 😄 solving problems, creating solutions and now seeing a clear value in taking the time to design a solution before coding. Throw yourself into it. You wont ever know everything from start. Build some projects first for portfolio and skills. Take time to design solutions. For me, the real learning started when i got the job.

    I love this take. All of my connections that gave me FAANG referrals were people that shared my interests and hobbies(mma, skateboarding, guitar) we didn’t focus on talking tech, we became great friends and when I needed to find job they had my back without hesitation because we were Friends not random profiles on LinkedIn. Making real friends is much easier than making “connections”

    This is sooo spot on. The best connections I’ve made in tech were made from common interests outside of web development. The classmates, instructors, coworkers/employers I’ve stayed in touch with over the years are people who love video games, anime, working out, etc. treat people like PEOPLE not just “a connection” and it will feel more natural.

    • @DonTheDeveloper
      @DonTheDeveloper 2 дня назад

      Exactly! That's the same for me as well - I kept in touch with people I had common interests in outside of coding. This sums it up perfectly: "treat people like PEOPLE not just “a connection” and it will feel more natural."

    Definitely a skill issue, but not in the way you might think. Companies who employ entry-level people have to understand that "entry level" means just that. demanding higher level skills for entry-level positions that nobody has been trained to do, because your team doesn't have the time, capacity or desire to mentor them, is a sure-fire way of killing your own industry by making your demands outstrip the current educational framework. You're making it impossible for people fresh out of college to get employed, when it should be YOUR job to upskill and mentor them.

    Call me old and dumb because I started learning php way back in 2009, but I still cant wrap my head around the idea that people uses javascript for back-end. I know people do it nowadays but it still doesnt compute. Like, my brain just cannot adapt to the idea that it's more than just a front end language.

    Copy pasta code monkey culture doesn't help. People are being conditioned to ctrl-v instead of think like engineers. Some of this is probably due to the growing attitude that employees are disposable. People are less inclined to invest themselves into a company when the company is unwilling to invest in them. Of course new entrants to a career aren't going to have the same skills as those with experience. Companies don't want to build talent anymore so people are left to their own devices. It's no wonder that standards are falling. Companies aren't upholding their end of the bargain anymore. They only want to hire people with experience and wonder why the pool is quickly shrinking. New workers need companies that are willing to invest in them if they expect workers to fit their needs. Otherwise, you end up with a bunch of people who have little real world ability. Good luck with that. I remember applying for junior and intern positions some years back and most of them required me to be proficient in the major front and back end technologies, usually with a stack of obscure crap thrown into the mix. 'Proficient' was a commonly used term in many of the job posts. For junior and intern positions. They wanted me to be a 'proficient' full-stack developer right out of the gate and the pay was pretty low. I eventually gave up after drowning at one of the jobs I landed and became a freelance web developer. I quickly learned how much the industry sucks in general. From clients to employers. It just sucked. Expectations didn't align with reality and it seems that things have gotten worse. I switched to a career in healthcare and the industry has invested a lot into making me an excellent provider. Big reveal: I now teach others how to be excellent too (in skills, attitude, and ethics), completing the circle of life that is supposed to exist within an industry. My experience in tech was the exact opposite.

    Where are his projects? GitHub account, LinkedIn, Eventbrite. Did they teach them SQL, algorithm and data structures, version control systems like git, design patterns in their schools. Most coding boot camps move really fast without grasping most of the core concepts down or leaving it out. There are coding communities out there too. Sadly many aren't aware of them too. Rough, journey without a community or support for their path living their best life.

    25 years in the industry, from dev to director. If you are entering the market and don't have a portfolio (example sites) even if they're basic and no one paid you, you're not getting an interview. To get an internship this is at least 6 months of working nights and weekends to challenge yourself to create custom changes, not borrowing someone else's WordPress widget.
